According to OSHA, slips, trips, and falls constitute the majority of general industry accidents and are the second leading cause of fatalities behind motor vehicle accidents.  They cause 15% of all accidental deaths.  According to the CDC in 2012 in the USA alone, the direct medical costs of older adult slips and falls, adjusted for inflation, were $30 billion USD.  With the population aging, both the number of slip and falls and the costs to treat fall injuries are likely to increase.  In 2012 the USA alone emergency departments treated 2.4 million nonfatal fall injuries among older adults; more than 722,000 of these patients had to be hospitalized.  Again, according to the CDC by 2020 the annual direct and indirect cost of fall injuries is expected to reach $67.7 billion (in 2012 US dollars).  Slips and falls are the leading cause of workers’ compensation claims and are the leading cause of occupational injury for people aged 55 years and older.  According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), floors and flooring materials contribute directly to more than 2 million fall injuries each year in the USA alone.
